Raja Chhatarsal divided his lands in 1731 into several portions, one of which was given to Raja Jagat Rai. At his death in 1757, a dispute arose as to the succession, with Raja Pahar Singh, seizing the territory forcing Raja Khuman Singh to flee. Terms were agreed to in 1764, and Raja Khuman Singh received Charkhari, becoming its first Raja in 1765. The Maharaja maintains a military force of 188 cavalry, 1552 infantry, and 42 guns, and is entitled to a salute of 1 1 guns (in 1893). The motto of the family is Singhasanesho ran Vijayi ("The Master of the Throne is the Victorious in War"). Charkhari State was founded in 1765 by Saurabh Singh Bundela, a Rajput of the Bundela clan, as an offshoot of Panna State

Indian Princely State Charkhari, Formerly Central India states (Bundelkhand) Agencies, now in Madhya Pradesh State. Area of state 2,279 Sq. Km.   , Population was 1,20,351  in 1931, Privy purse was 95,900 Rs. at the time of accession in to independent India on 1  Jan.1950.
